Call an audible is a slang term used in American football to describe the act of changing the play at the last minute based on what the quarterback sees on the field. It means adjusting the original plan or strategy in response to the current situation.

In football, when a team lines up for a play, the quarterback usually calls out the play or strategy to his teammates. However, if the quarterback sees something unexpected or believes that the original plan will not work, he can “call an audible” and change the play at the line of scrimmage. This allows the team to adapt to the defense or make a better decision to increase their chances of success.

Example 1: The quarterback noticed that the defense was ready to blitz, so he decided to call an audible and change the play to a quick pass to counter their aggressive approach.

Example 2: With only seconds left on the clock, the quarterback saw an opening in the defense and decided to call an audible for a hail mary pass to try and score a touchdown before the game ended.
