Womansplaining is when a woman explains something to someone, often a man, in a condescending or patronizing way. It is a term used to criticize instances where a woman assumes authority over a topic and explains it in a belittling manner, usually based on the assumption that the person being explained to lacks knowledge or understanding.
Two practical examples of using the term “womansplaining” are:
1. A group of friends, both men and women, are having a discussion about politics. One of the men starts sharing his opinion on a particular policy, but before he can finish, one of the women interrupts and begins explaining politics to him in a demeaning way, assuming he has no knowledge on the subject. This action can be referred to as “womansplaining.”
2. In an office meeting, a male colleague is presenting a project idea to the team. However, a female coworker constantly interrupts him, explaining the concept to everyone as if she is the only one who truly understands it. She minimizes the man’s contributions and talks over him, demonstrating “womansplaining” behavior.
In both examples, the term “womansplaining” highlights the act of a woman disregarding the expertise or perspective of the person she is explaining to, solely based on their gender, and engaging in patronizing behavior.
