Wishful Thinking

« Back to Glossary Index

Wishful thinking is when someone believes in something that they want to happen, even though there is little chance of it actually occurring. It shows optimism and a desire for things to be a certain way, even if that reality seems unlikely.

Examples:

1. Person A: “I think my favorite team is going to win the championship this year, even though they haven’t won in a decade and are currently in last place.”
Person B: “That’s just wishful thinking. It’s highly unlikely, considering their current performance.”

2. Person A: “I really hope I win the lottery tomorrow so I can quit my job and travel the world.”
Person B: “Sounds like wishful thinking to me. The odds of winning the lottery are incredibly slim.”
