R/whoosh is an internet slang term used to describe a situation when someone misses or fails to understand a joke, sarcasm, or a reference. It originated from the sound effect “whoosh,” which indicates something going over someone’s head. This term is commonly used in online forums or comment sections to point out when someone didn’t catch a humorous or ironic statement.

Examples:

Person A: Did you hear about the mathematician who’s afraid of negative numbers? Hell stop at nothing to avoid them!

Person B (does not get the joke): I don’t get it, what’s funny about that?

Person C: r/whoosh

Commenter X: Wow, this movie has more plot holes than Swiss cheese.

Commenter Y: But Swiss cheese doesn’t have any holes…

Commenter Z: r/whoosh

In these examples, Person B and Commenter Y fail to recognize the humor in the original statements. Thus, Person C and Commenter Z use “r/whoosh” to highlight their misunderstanding or lack of humor, indicating that the joke went right over their heads.

Synonyms:
missed, didn't get, did not understand, passed over, went over head
