Put Your Back Up means to become defensive or to get angry and defensive in response to a certain situation or comment. It refers to the act of figuratively bracing oneself and getting ready for a possible confrontation or argument.

Examples:

Example 1:

Person A: “I don’t understand why you’re so obsessed with that band, their music is terrible!”
Person B: “Hey, don’t put your back up! Music tastes are subjective, and it’s fine if you don’t like them, but I really enjoy their music.”

Example 2:

Person C: “You’re always late! I can never count on you.”
Person D: “Hold on, don’t put your back up. I apologize for being late this time, but it’s not fair to say I’m always late. I’ll do my best to be more punctual in the future.”
