Proust
Proust means a sudden wave of memory or nostalgia, usually triggered by something small and ordinary.
People use it when a smell, song, place, or object yanks them back into the past so fast it feels emotional. It gives a more literary, slightly polished way to say "this unlocked a memory", which makes it sound thoughtful instead of just sentimental.

What People Mean When They Say Proust
The term points to a very specific kind of memory trigger: not just remembering something, but being hit with a detailed, emotional flash from it. The word comes from Marcel Proust, whose writing is famous for that kind of involuntary memory.
Online, it usually lands as a shorthand for a deeply nostalgic moment. If someone says something gave them a Proust hit, they mean it pulled up a whole scene from the past, not just a quick thought.
How People Actually Use It
You will see it in captions, bookish posts, music threads, and group chats where people want a cleaner word than "nostalgia". It works best with sensory triggers like old photos, childhood food, specific songs, or familiar smells.
It also has a slight culture signal to it. Saying Proust makes the memory sound reflective and articulate, so it can feel more styled than plain talk like "this reminded me of when I was 12".
Examples You'd Actually See
That old ringtone was such a Proust moment for me.
Smelling my grandma's kitchen hit me with a full Proust flash.
I found my yearbook and immediately went Proust mode.
Fits the Vibe vs. Trying Too Hard
Works: Hearing that song in the store gave me a Proust moment.
Avoid: Proust energy at brunch today, honestly. because it turns a specific memory word into random filler.
Where Proust Stands Now
Proust still feels current, but it is niche rather than everyday. Most people recognize the meaning from context, yet it sounds smartest when used sparingly and with a real memory trigger behind it.
