Premises is a term in internet slang that refers to a statement or argument that someone makes. It can also refer to the assumptions on which the statement or argument is based. Premises are the foundations or starting points of a discussion or debate.
Example 1:
Person A: “I think dogs are the best pets because they are loyal and loving.”
Person B: “Those are valid premises, but I think cats are the best pets because they are independent and low-maintenance.”
Example 2:
Person A: “I believe that video games are harmful for children because they promote violence.”
Person B: “You’re basing your argument on the premise that video games lead to violence, but studies have shown that there is no direct correlation.”
In the first example, Person A presents the premises that dogs are loyal and loving as a reason why they believe dogs are the best pets. Person B acknowledges these premises but counters with their own set of premises to support their belief that cats are the best pets.
In the second example, Person A states their belief that video games are harmful for children based on the premise that they promote violence. Person B challenges this premise by mentioning studies that suggest there is no direct link between video games and violent behavior in children.
