Poverty Franchise

« Back to Glossary Index

Poverty Franchise refers to a situation where someone or something pretends to be affluent or successful, but in reality, they are struggling financially or lacking in resources. It is often used humorously to describe a person or business trying to appear fancy, elegant, or high-class when they clearly don’t have the means to support that lifestyle.

Example 1:
Kevin always posts pictures of himself driving expensive cars and dining at fancy restaurants, but everyone knows he lives in a run-down apartment and works a minimum wage job. He’s nothing more than a poverty franchise.

Example 2:
The new coffee shop in town boasts about its premium coffee beans and claims to sell luxurious cups of coffee, but the reality is their coffee tastes no different than the average cup, and the shop is always nearly empty. It’s just another poverty franchise trying to fake sophistication.
