Placebo

The internet slang term “placebo” refers to something that is meant to have a certain effect but actually doesn’t have any real impact or benefit. It is often used to describe deceptive or ineffective actions or objects.

Examples:

When someone claims to have a secret hack to unlock all the features in a game, but it turns out to be a placebo, promising results but actually does nothing.
On social media, someone may post a photo of a pile of books by their bedside to give the impression of being well-read and intelligent, but it might just be a placebo, as they never actually read those books.
