Hit the books” means to begin studying or reading books, usually in a focused and dedicated manner.

Examples:
I have a big exam tomorrow, so I need to hit the books tonight and review all the material.
– My brother is always procrastinating, but when it’s time to hit the books, he becomes extremely focused and finishes all his assignments.
