Highjacking

Highjacking is an internet slang term used to describe the act of taking control or diverting a conversation or discussion in a different direction, often by forcefully shifting the topic or steering the conversation towards one’s own agenda. It happens when someone manipulates the discussion to focus on their own interests, disregarding the original subject or the opinions of others involved.

Examples:

– In an online gaming forum, a user starts a discussion about a newly released game and asks for opinions. However, another user highjacks the conversation by abruptly changing the topic to complain about the prices of in-game purchases, diverting the focus and disregarding the original purpose of the discussion.

– On a social media platform, someone comments on a post by sharing their experience with a certain product. Instead of engaging in a conversation about the product, another user highjacks the thread by promoting their own business, attempting to redirect the attention to their own products and services, which undermines the purpose of the original discussion.
