The internet slang termGatsby” refers to the act of living a lavish and extravagant lifestyle on social media platforms, while in reality struggling financially or experiencing a less glamorous life. It is inspired by the character Jay Gatsby from F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel “The Great Gatsby,” who leads a luxurious life full of parties and wealth, yet hides his true financial situation.

Examples:

– Example 1: Sarah always posts pictures of herself traveling to exotic destinations and wearing high-end designer clothes. However, her friends discovered that she actually lives paycheck-to-paycheck and borrows most of the things she flaunts. They called her out for living a Gatsby life on Instagram.

– Example 2: John constantly shares photos of parties, expensive dinners, and fancy cars on social media. However, his close friends suspect that it is all a Gatsby act because they know he is drowning in debt and struggling to make ends meet in reality.

Synonyms:
party, celebration, extravaganza, blowout
