This term gained popularity due to the prevalence of unreliable sources on the internet and the ease with which false information can be shared.

Examples:

1. During the election season, there were several instances of fake news circulating on social media. One example was a fabricated article claiming that a candidate was involved in a scandal, which influenced many voters’ opinions.

2. A popular internet meme falsely claimed that a certain fruit had curing properties for a serious illness. This fake news caused people to believe in a false remedy and potentially ignore or delay seeking proper medical treatment.
