When someone is “catfished,” it means they have been deceived or tricked into a relationship online by someone who assumes a false identity. This term originated from the 2010 documentary “Catfishand it is commonly used to describe situations where someone creates a fake profile on a social media or dating platform to lure others into an online relationship. Being catfished can lead to emotional distress and disappointment when the person discovers the truth.

Example 1: Sarah thought she was in a genuine online relationship with a successful entrepreneur named John, but she later discovered she had been catfished by a teenager posing as an adult.

Example 2: After months of chatting with Amy, Mark finally decided to meet her in person, only to find out that she had been catfishing him all along by using a models photos as her own.
