Slang term: FOMOFear of Missing Out

FOMO is an acronym for “Fear of Missing Out.” It refers to the feeling of anxiety or unease that one experiences when they believe that others may be having enjoyable experiences or opportunities while they are not present or involved. FOMO often arises from the fear of being excluded or left behind and can be intensified with the rise of social media and constant updates on other peoples activities.

FOMO is a common term used in today’s digital age, especially among younger generations. Many people experience FOMO when they see their friends and acquaintances uploading pictures of a fun party they couldn’t attend or sharing exciting travel stories that they missed out on. It can also occur when people are constantly checking their devices for updates and fearing to miss out on important news or events happening in the world. FOMO can lead individuals to make impulsive decisions, join activities they are not interested in, or constantly seek validation from others to avoid feeling left out. Here are two examples illustrating the use of FOMO:

1. “I couldn’t resist going to the concert even though I wasn’t a fan of the band. I just had major FOMO when I saw all my friends posting pictures and videos from the show.”
2. “I’ve been spending hours on social media because I have serious FOMO. I don’t want to miss out on anything happening with my friends or in the world, even though it’s making me feel overwhelmed.”
