A backseat gamer refers to someone who critiques or gives unwanted advice while watching someone else play video games. They typically sit in the metaphorical “backseat” and provide commentary on the players decisions and performance.

A backseat gamer is often a spectator who may not be actively participating in the game but feels the need to offer their opinions and suggestions on how the player should play. This can be frustrating for the person actually playing the game, as it may feel like their autonomy and enjoyment are being undermined. Backseat gaming can also occur remotely, where someone is watching a livestream or recorded gameplay and provides continuous commentary in the chat or comments section.

Example 1: “I was trying to enjoy playing this new game, but my friend couldn’t resist being a backseat gamer and kept telling me what to do at every turn.”

Example 2: “It’s more fun to play games without backseat gamers constantly telling you how to play. I just want to explore and figure things out on my own.”
