Affluenza

« Back to Glossary Index

Affluenza refers to a mental or psychological condition that affects individuals who are privileged or wealthy, causing them to have a lack of empathy, responsibility, or concern for others. It often stems from a sense of entitlement and overindulgence. This term is used to criticize and highlight the negative consequences of excessive materialism and consumerism.

Example 1: The heir to a billionaire empire was caught driving under the influence but was only given probation, as his defense team argued that he suffered from affluenza, claiming his wealthy upbringing shielded him from understanding the severity of his actions.

Example 2: The teenage socialite constantly throws extravagant parties and flaunts her designer wardrobe on social media, completely oblivious to the struggles of those less fortunate. It’s a clear case of affluenza, where her money and privilege have disconnected her from the realities of the world.
