Sandbagging is a term used in internet slang to describe the act of downplaying one’s abilities or skills intentionally to deceive others or gain an advantage.

Example 1:

Person A: Hey, do you want to play a game of chess?
Person B: Sure, but I have to warn you, I’ve never played before. I’m really bad at it.
Person A: Okay, I guess I’ll take it easy on you then.
Person B (after winning effortlessly): Well, I guess I wasn’t that bad after all, huh? I was sandbagging!

Example 2:

Person X: I heard you’re participating in the upcoming talent show. What are you planning to do?
Person Y: Oh, just a simple little acoustic guitar performance. Nothing special.
Person X: Well, I’m sure you’ll do great!
Person Y (blows the audience away with an incredible guitar solo): Yeah, I guess I undersold it. I was totally sandbagging!
